Job Description

Reporting directly to the Deputy Minister, Primary and Preventative Health Services, the Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM) & Senior Financial Officer (SFO) serves as the most senior finance leader within the ministry. In this pivotal role, you will operate at the intersection of fiscal strategy, public accountability, and political sensitivity—ensuring sound financial stewardship while assessing the broader impacts of key ministry decisions across government.

As a trusted strategic advisor to the Deputy Minister, Minister, and Executive Team, you will play a central role in shaping high-stakes decisions where financial, political, and reputational considerations are deeply interconnected. Bringing a Government of Alberta–wide perspective, you will evaluate how ministry strategies influence the province’s consolidated fiscal position, long-term sustainability, risk exposure, and public confidence.

Lead fiscal strategy, long-term financial planning, and major risk management for a complex, high-profile ministry while providing expert advice on politically sensitive, high-impact decisions. You will ensure the ministry’s fiscal integrity, oversee forecasting and budgeting processes that reflect system-wide implications, and exercise sound judgment to navigate competing priorities. You will also provide strategic oversight of the financial function through strong governance, delegation, and leadership of high-performing teams.

Qualifications

An accomplished senior executive, you bring extensive experience leading complex initiatives and shaping fiscal strategy within the public sector.

You possess strong financial, strategic, and risk management expertise, complemented by deep knowledge of government legislation and exceptional political and business acumen.
