Job Description

The Department of Economic Development has an ambitious agenda to enable economic growth and prosperity in the Province. Working in collaboration with Invest Nova Scotia and across government departments and sectors, the Department is focused on growing the province’s strategic sectors, investing in new ideas, technologies and entrepreneurship, and working to ensure all communities experience growth and maximize their strategic advantages.
 
The Deputy Minister of Economic Development is responsible for leading the department in its execution of government priorities, ensuring Crown corporations are aligned to government strategy and providing advice and support to senior officials including ministers and the executive council. The Deputy Minister works in collaboration with economic development partners, sector leaders, academia and across other levels of government. The Deputy Minister of Economic Development is an integral part of the Committee of Deputy Ministers who lead departments across government.
 
The Deputy Minister is a proven leader with both private and public sector experience. They are results-oriented, relationship focused with a track record for catalyzing change. The Deputy Minister is comfortable in complex environments, risk tolerant and action oriented. They understand the importance of building and supporting a strong team and are passionate about Nova Scotia and the myriad opportunities in the province.
 
The ideal candidate has 10-15 years of executive level experience, leading within complex organizations of varying sizes. They have an entrepreneurial orientation with a track record of identifying trends, seizing opportunities and managing relationships across sectors. They are comfortable working within a publicly accountable context and hold themselves to the highest standards of professional public service. They are committed to creating a business-friendly environment which will be competitive on the local, national, and international level. Collaboration, creativity, tenacity, and accountability are the hallmarks of their leadership.
