Job Description

Established in 2008, the Office of the Auditor General of Halifax Regional Municipality is the home to Atlantic Canada’s only Municipal Auditor General, which supports public sector accountability. Auditors share a core mandate of providing the public and their elected representatives with independent assurance about whether governments are appropriately stewarding public resources and effectively delivering public services. This mandate is primarily carried out through the undertaking of various audits of the public sector. Audit results are typically reported publicly to the legislative branch of government.

Position Profile

Reporting to Regional Council through the Audit and Finance Standing Committee, the Municipal Auditor General champions the mission of the office to deliver independent audits that strengthen accountability and encourage improved efficiency and effectiveness of municipal programs. They are accountable for exercising all powers, duties, and functions as defined by provincial legislation and municipal by-laws through conducting performance auditing. By providing independent and objective insights into the effectiveness of public expenditures and operations, the Municipal Auditor General contributes to more informed, transparent, and overall improved governmental performance.

Ideal Candidate Profile

As the ideal candidate, you are a designated professional accountant (CPA) with a public accounting license, strong experience in performance audit work in complex, multi-stakeholder, public sector environments, and a solid understanding of current practices and trends in the legislative audit field. As a leader, you apply high ethical standards and bring the utmost integrity to all that you do. You are known for your exceptional work ethic and communication skills in both verbal and written formats, and you are able to communicate findings and plans in a clear and concise manner.  You work well with both your team and organizational partners to build agreement within audited municipal entities, without compromising the independence of the office. Above all, you bring a genuine passion for public service and are motivated by the opportunity to have meaningful impact and better your community through improved municipal performance.
