The Compliance Branch of the Tax Compliance and Benefits Division supports career development, diversity and inclusive workplace strategies. Dependent on ongoing business requirements, the successful candidate will be able to gain enhanced exposure to, and knowledge of, multiple tax statutes so that your knowledge base is varied and fulsome.

What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:

• independently conduct detailed field audits of large and complex taxpayers by meeting with taxpayers and their representatives and tax advisors and resolving disputes arising from legislative interpretation or non-compliance
• participate as a team member in audits of the larger, more complex corporate taxpayers
• ascertain and maximize compliance with relevant tax legislation by discussing and negotiating audit plans and tax reassessment proposals with taxpayers and their representatives
• apply complex audit techniques and sampling, test computerized accounting systems, and review internal financial system controls
• prepare detailed audit working papers in accordance with ministry standards, policies and practices, as well as generally accepted standards within the audit community
• recommend referrals to other government areas and other jurisdictions (e.g. Investigations) for action
• appear as a Crown witness in court cases
• conduct special assignments on tax issues or on general audit administration matters and projects, as required

How do I qualify?

Mandatory:

• Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation (formerly Certified General Accountant (CGA) designation, or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation, or Chartered Accountant (CA) designation), or successful completion of a recognized university degree or college diploma, plus or including courses in Introductory Financial Accounting, Intermediate Financial Accounting, Advanced Financial Accounting, Auditing, Taxation, either Cost Accounting or Management Accounting, and one additional course in Auditing, Taxation, Cost Accounting, Management Accounting or Finance.

Note: Candidates selected for an interview will be asked to provide proof of designation/academic qualifications. Candidates will be asked to clearly indicate on their transcripts which of their courses meet the position's academic requirement. Candidates who obtained their qualifications outside Canada will be asked to provide proof that these qualifications are recognized as equivalencies in Canada.

This position also requires overnight travel to taxpayer's place of business to complete audit assignments.

Research, Analytical and Leadership Skills:

- you have research and analytical skills to evaluate results and resolve compliance problems
- you have demonstrated sound judgment and leadership skills to provide assistance and training on technical matters

Accounting and Auditing Knowledge:

- you have knowledge of accounting principles to perform large audits or compliance projects
- you demonstrate the ability to interpret and apply federal and provincial tax legislation
- you have knowledge of auditing techniques, including computer-assisted auditing techniques (CAAT)

Interpersonal and Communication Skills:

- you have effective interpersonal and communication skills to deal with disputes, encourage voluntary compliance, and effectively deal with taxpayers and/or their representatives
- you can defend decisions in the event of objection or appeal of the reassessment before administrative tribunals or the Courts (i.e. appear as a Crown witness in court cases)
