J.E. Hodgetts and Roland Parenteau Awards


About the Award

Both created in 1992, these Awards celebrate and recognize the best articles in English and French language published in the Canadian Public Administration journal. 

The J.E. Hodgetts Award goes to the finest article in English appearing in the Canadian Public Administration journal . This annual was created in honour of one of the deans in the field of public administration scholarship, J.E. "Ted" Hodgetts (1917 - 2009). 

The Prix Roland Parenteau (1921 – 2015) goes to the finest article in French appearing in the Canadian Public Administration journal. This award was created in honour of one of the great figures in the field of public administration scholarship in Quebec, Roland Parenteau.

Criteria for Selection

  • Be original, well written, clear and logical in argument, presentation and style.
  • Represent an advancement in knowledge in the field of public administration of Canada.
  • Be reflective of contemporary practice while seeking to advance theory.
  • If, in the opinions of the Editor and the Associate Editor there is no article meriting the award, none will be given.

Selection Process

  • The Canadian Public Administration journal Editor and the Associate Editor for each language nominate up to three articles from the most recent volume.
  • Only full-length research articles are eligible.
  • The Editor and the Associate Editor select no more than three members of the Editorial Board to panels, one for the English article and one for the French, to review the nominated articles to select a winner in each category.
  • The three panel members are asked to rank the entries.
  • In the event of a tie, the Editors consult to determine a winner.

The committee is pleased to announce that the 2022 winner of the J.E. Hodgetts Award is Maya Eichler for the article Administrative tribunals and equity: Military sexual assault survivors at the Veterans Review and Appeal Board.
