About the role

Under the direction of the Director, Strategic Policy and Planning, the Senior Policy Advisor:

  • leads strategic analysis – including policy research, policy reviews and policy development – and provides recommendations to inform senior-level decision-making and priority-setting on matters related to Indigenous arts and cultures;
  • provides leadership and expert advice across the organization on the implementation of the Council’s strategic plan commitments in the areas of sovereignty and self-determination of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples and to uphold their rights as the First peoples of this land, as well as contributes to the formulation of policy on other major, complex corporate issues including decolonization, equity, diversity and inclusion, social justice and environment;
  • represents the Council at a senior level on major policy questions related in particular to Indigenous arts/cultures, and decolonization;
  • fosters long-term relationships of trust, engages effectively with external stakeholders as well as staff and management at Council, identifies opportunities for collaboration, and protects and advances the Council’s reputation as an exemplary Crown Corporation; and
  • develops initiatives to better support Indigenous communities to participate more fully in the arts and cultural sector as well as strategies and actions as identified in the Council’s strategic plan to contribute to the inclusive expansion of the role of the arts in enriching Canada’s public life, specifically as they relate to the Indigenous peoples.
  • works collaboratively across Council, including with colleagues in Strategy, Public Affairs and Arts Engagement (in particular, International Coordination, Cultural Diplomacy and Partnerships) and Arts Granting Program Division (in particular Creating, Knowing and Sharing: The Arts and Culture of First Nations, Inuit and Métis People).

You may be required to travel up to 25 days per year and on occasion, work irregular hours.

This position is located in Ottawa. If relocation is applicable, the Council provides eligible employees with financial assistance to help offset specific moving expenses associated with relocation to the National Capital Region (NCR).

Requirements for the position

Education

  • An undergraduate degree in public administration, social sciences, arts management or policy, or a related field or an equivalent combination of professional experience and education related to the responsibilities of the position

 Experience

  • Seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in an arts or culture environment
  • Experience in providing strategic analysis and recommendation to senior leaders
  • Experience in working with government, funding organizations or related stakeholders
  • Experience in a leadership role would be an asset

    Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the arts community and government policies regarding the arts and culture, especially Indigenous arts and cultures
  • Knowledge of the Canada Council, its mandate, policies, programs, legislation, and/or the field of social or cultural funding

 Bilingual Requirements

  • This position requires the use of both official languages. The requirements in the second official language are: an intermediate level in oral and reading comprehension and a basic level in writing.
