What you will do
The Office of Parliamentary Counsel (“OPC”) provides comprehensive and nonpartisan legal and legislative services to Alberta’s legislative branch of government, which includes the Speaker, Presiding Officers, Members of the Legislative Assembly, and the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly. The OPC is also in-house counsel for the office that supports the work of elected officials, the Legislative Assembly Office (“LAO”).
The OPC is offering an exciting, entry-level opportunity in the position of Legal Counsel. In this fast-paced environment the Legal Counsel position plays an important role in supporting the OPC’s mandate to provide effective, nonpartisan and high-quality legal and legislative services to the Legislative Assembly. The OPC provides legal advice on a wide variety of subjects including constitutional law, parliamentary privilege and procedure, employment matters, contracts, leases, public procurement, intellectual property and administrative law. The provision of drafting services includes the drafting of contracts, leases and private Members’ legislation.

The key to success in this role is your interpersonal skills and ability to communicate legal information and advice in a clear and effective manner coupled with strong and effective proofreading and written composition skills.
You will also bring solid organizational skills and a meticulous attention to detail as well as a focus on providing client-centered services.
Your professionalism, judgment and tact will ensure that you are able to support the OPC’s unyielding dedication to ensuring that the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and its Members are provided the highest standard of impartial legal and legislative drafting services. An interest in the parliamentary process and an awareness of recent constitutional and parliamentary developments in other jurisdictions is required.
What you bring
Your background includes a Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB), active membership in or immediate eligibility for entrance to the Law Society of Alberta and up to four years of professional legal experience.
Your past work experience includes legal research and writing and contract, lease or legislative drafting.
Knowledge of the Westminster parliamentary system and the composition and structure of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta is considered an asset.

The monthly salary range for this position is $6,728.84 to $8,669.42 and is dependent on qualifications. We support your career development throughout your time with us at the LAO.
